Learn mindfulness online: what to think about

You are considering learning mindfulness and you think an online approach, from the comfort and security of your own home, might be what you want. What do you need to think about before you learn mindfulness online?

  • Do you have easy access to the right equipment at home? Desktop or laptop computer, or tablet, all work. Mobile phone is possible but not as easy. The small screen, for example, may make it difficult for you to follow movement meditations. And you need a stand for your phone.
  • How comfortable are you with the technology? Do you have any concerns about what to do, for example, if you cannot get online? Or if the link fails during the session? Take time to note down any concerns you have and send a message to the teacher. You will not be the first person to ask.
  • Is privacy going to be an issue for you? Sometimes sensitive and confidential issues arise during the discussion sections of mindfulness teaching. Ideally you do not want to be overheard or interrupted. Does this mean you need to think about the best time of day, and the best place, for you to join a group?
  • Would headphones be a good idea? They can help you maintain confidentiality and cut out background noise.
  • Do you need to download software for the teaching? For my courses, I use Zoom
  • Where do you want to be to take part in the mindfulness? Ideally somewhere comfortable (but not too comfortable) and the same place each week. It is best to have an upright chair to sit on. Plus, some floor space you can lie down on. A yoga mat if you have one (or a blanket) and a pillow for your head.
  • Set your computer, tablet, or laptop up in advance. You want the camera at eye-level and the device about arms width away from you. Plus make sure your microphone and headphones are working if you are using them.

If you are using a mobile phone for the session, recommend you turn off notifications and put calls on silent, so you are not disturbed.
